GISÈLE & SAMUEL

GISÈLE & SAMUEL : 24” X 18” – Acrylic and mixed media on wood. As promised, here’s latest piece in my GISÈLE collection. This time, she is painted in a smaller format. As I enjoy adding items of our heritage, she wears a red rose on which you can discern a rather refined handwriting dating back to the end of The Renaissance (early 1600’s). It belongs to the great explorer Samuel De Champlain. This historical letter to King Henri IV, preceded Champlain’s first sailing on The Saint-Lawrence River. Texture: Plaster and fabrics.

TOKYO

TOKYO : 72” X 72” - Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. This commissioned piece is the 4th version in my cow series.  Its composition is similar to its three cousins, however it stands out with its unique colour choices, designs, patterns and personalized items. Because of the owner’s strong ties to Japan, I have entitled this painting: TOKYO.  Notice it on the left ear. FRIDA KALHO’s life was very significant to this SAMSON collector.  For this reason, a love letter from FRIDA to her Diego is incorporated into the upper portion of the painting. The colours of Colombia are also of importance here.  Therefore,…

LA POUTINE

“LA POUTINE” – 40” X 30” – Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. As you know, I like to incorporate personal experiences and culture into my art work. For this piece, I’ve chosen one of Quebec’s best known delights: LA POUTINE. Embedded within the layers of paint, you will find tips and secrets on how to make the perfect Poutine, our Chef Ricardo’s delectable gravy recipe and of course, the very controversial origin of this little indulgence. Story says that it all started at RESTAURANT IDÉAL in Warwick, QC in the 1950’s. Bon appétit!! Background: Quebec’s chef Ricardo’s recipes, Montreal…

1991

« 1991 » - 60“ X 40“ – Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas. This personalized piece symbolizes the journey of a family of four living in Montreal.  We can discover many meaningful items (interest, sports, important dates, events and places, etc.) of each of the family members.  I give you the challenge to pinpoint a few of them. Note: Magazine and newspaper articles, maps of Montreal Metro System as well as the St-Laurence River, burlap sack, etc.

Amour Brute (Savage Love)

"AMOUR BRUTE" (Savage Love) – 40” X 30” – Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas. This piece inspires hope and confirms that every soul hides a warm sensitive side, however subtle it can sometimes be. That is where The Bull and the Rose come from… Not so tough, this guy! Note: Background, article (honouring one of my favourite journalists, Pierre Foglia) published in Montreal's newspaper, La Presse's very last edition, December 2017. Reference to Montreal Subway System inciting the use of public transit. Texture: Fabric from my mother-in-law's store in New Brunswick, etc.

HER MAJESTY

« HER MAJESTY » - 48” X 48” – Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. This commissioned piece definitely has an English feel. The bronze crowns symbolize British royalty. You can also find a map and logo of the London Tube (metro subway system), David Beckham’s # 7 Jersey (Manchester United), and London’s shared bicycle system. The owners of this work, being quite cosmopolitan, are characterized with many hints of their journeys. To capture their attachment to Montenegro and Serbia, an olive tree branch extends from our muse’s mouth. If you look closely, you will also find a Swiss flag,…

DAHLIAS ETCETERA

DAHLIAS ETCETERA – 22” x 28” – Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Here’s the ultimate solution to brighten-up gloomy winter days. This highly colourful blend displays a variety of dahlias, one of my favourite flowers. PARC BELMONT

“PARC BELMONT” – 48” X 36” - ACRYLIC AND MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS. Having grown up in Sherbrooke, QC, I did not have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of Le Parc Belmont. The only reference I had was the song (of the same title) of our iconic singer, Diane Dufresne (composer: Luc Plamondon, 1979). This piece symbolises the colourful horses of the famous Carrousel that revolved for six decades on the north-west side of Montreal. Unfortunately, the opening of another amusement park (“La Ronde”) and the raising of the city taxes forced the historic establishment to close its doors…
